THE SITE

This is a site about Chitpavans. Chitpavans originate from Konkan, the coastal region of Maharashtra State, India. They are known in Maharashtra as Kokanastha Brahmins. Chitpavans are famous for their patriotism, valour, simplicity, dedication, perfection and frankness. They are pragmatic, open minded and always ahead of their times.

Unknown to history before 1700 A.D. Chitpavans occupied centre stage of Indian polity till 1947. Peshawas who controlled one third of India for a century were Chitpavan. Nanasaheb Peshava and Babasaheb Bhave Nargundkar, the only rulers with the exception of the Queen of Jhansi, who waged war against the British in 1857 were Chitpavan. Revolutionaries Chaphekar Brothers, Ranade, Kanhere and Karve who gladly embraced death to avenge atrocities of the British were Chitpavan. Lokmanya Tilak and Revolutionaries Phadke, Savarkar Brothers and Gogate who went to jail for years in their struggle to free India from British clutches were Chitpavan!

Statesman Gokhale and Freedom Fighter and Social Workers Vinoba Bhave and Saneguruji who gave their life to free India were Chitpavan. Social Reformers Lokhitvadi, Ranade and Agarkar were Chitpavan. Maharshi Karve who spent his life for women education and their upliftment was a Chitpavan. Musicians Paluskar, Bhatkande and Vaze who enriched Indian music and Keshavsut who gave new direction to Marathi poetry were Chitpavan. Scholars Kane and Paranjape and Historians Rajwade and Khare whose work has added to our knowledge and Social Worker and Spiritualist Athavale who worked for betterment of the Society were Chitpavan. Educationist Ketkar who worked all his life for education of orphans and poors was a Chitpavan!

Pioneers like Phalke who made first Indian motion picture, Bhave who staged first Marathi drama, Ketkar who published first Marathi encyclopaedia, Chhatre who established first Indian circus and Raghunath Karve the first Indian to think of birth control were Chitpavan! Whether it is Army, Arts, Education, Entertainment, Industry, Literature, Music, Politics, Research or Social Work you will find lasting imprints of Chitpavans. History of India can not be written without mentioning hundreds of great Chitpavans.
